last week, I was in miami for a wedding, which allowed me to explore the city for a couple of days. I was surprised by how much fun I had walking on the beach, visiting fisher island, and of course seeing the wynwood walls. actually the wynwood arts district was my number one place I wanted too see while visiting miami. I just thought it might be a place of style inspiration, which is something that I am always looking for. I don't necessarily love all street art, but I admire street artists who do something unique and visually stimulating. in los angeles, there is a lot of street art downtown, but wynwood is no comparison. there is literally something stand-out on every corner, which makes for eye catching photos. I took many photos in wynwood, but I must admit my favorite style moment came when I happened to wander into an interior and architectural design store, called glottman. that day I happened to wear my isabel marant floral dress with my missoni turban and it happened to blend perfectly with a floral carpet that I found on a wall with that store. I actually featured this dress earlier this year....as one of my surprise dress finds. immediately, when I saw this design wall print I thought it would make for an interesting photo so I asked my friend ivana to take some photos. I love the idea of blending in and with this carpet on the wall you could do just that. I thought this capture felt very renaissance, with an erik madigan heck influence, and I think the camouflage effect is quick striking. in a way, you have too look deep to find me. at any rate, this was one of my favorite miami moments and I must thank my friend ivana for capturing it. the funny part about this photo is that the designers in the store loved how I turned their wall into an impromptu photo shoot. at first, I thought they would tell me to leave the store, but I love how they encouraged me to do this....I guess you never know when style inspiration can happen!

I mentioned before about photographer erik madigan heck, who happens to be one of my favorite photographers at the moment. he does a lot of work for harper's bazaar and I believe he recently shot the cover of adele for time magazine, in such a beautiful portrait. at any rate, when I walked into that interior and design store in wynwood and saw that floral carpet wall I immediately thought of erik madigan heck's work, especially because he does so much with floral designs. I normally respond to black and white photography more, but how he plays with color and textures, is all so striking. I feel like you can't just look at his photos once, you have to stare deeply and observe all the detail. the photo I had in mind was this one from his september 2014 editorial entitled into the woods from harper's bazaar UK. the whole layout is eye popping and features model katrin thormann wearing various floral dresses in a magnificent garden. what's so great about this image is that her face is blurred out as well as the flowers in the background and all that is clear, is her dress. I have no idea how he did this image, but I find it all so alluring. I actually could stare at this all day, it almost feels like an ishihara test for your eyes. the other images in this layout are definitely more clear, but this is the one that popped in my head when I was browsing in that design store. its weird how images come to my mind when I see things in my everyday life, but erik madigan heck's photography has been a major influence on me, this past year. if you are unfamiliar do check him out, its very difficult not be inspired by his amazing eye!

its been a couple of years since I bought my maison martin margiela red dress from h&m and I must say I still find myself inspired by the look and feel of it. I remember buying it around christmas time so I thought I should definitely do something grand, to celebrate its beauty. lets also not forget that I try to make my life like a vogue italia editorial, so I thought I should do something cinematic with my canon rebel camera. my friend coleman looks very much like a john currin painting, so I thought I would have her wear my red dress. plus, with her pale skin and her silk bed sheets I thought that would make for an interesting combination. it feels very mysterious, with a touch of incognito chic, but most importantly I just love all that drapery. this is why I never get bored of this dress because you can wear it so many ways and I think lying down creates the most drama. of course, I enhanced the photo to make the red pop and I also added a tint of green with her silk sheets. the green was a little bit inspired by the cinematography from the 1991 polish/french film the double life of veronique. I just love the green tones and art direction of that movie and wanted to do something loosely like that. I think if you see the film you will understand. at any rate, I think this photo shows, just how alluring and striking a red dress can be. whether this dress is hanging in a closet or worn by somebody, it truly is a piece of art. I don't think I can ever forget that maison martin margiela collaboration.....it will always be my favorite and perhaps the most inspiring collection from h&m.

splendor in the grass

not only was the double life of veronique a loose inspiration for my red dress photo project, but also this annie leibovitz image of supermodel karlie kloss, lying in the grass. in case you don't remember this photo is from the july 2009 issue of US vogue and the dress is by zac posen. its no surprise really that I would love this image.....I mean just look at that drapery and the beautiful contrast of her red dress and that green grass. this gown is signature zac posen with that silhouette and that stunning silk material. plus, I love the body language. its definitely eye catching and I am not sure if she is sleeping or just having a moment in the grass. either way, I just love all the mystery that this photo conveys. a couple of weeks ago, I featured another similar annie leibovitz photo of a model in a black dress and I think by now its safe to say that annie leibovitz is quite good at capturing drapery, especially from the back side. I know my image doesn't look like this one, but I definitely wanted to capture that dramatic drapery feeling. it really is difficult to sum up why I find photographs like this, so inspiring, but not everything needs an explanation. I think you just have to stare at it and let the photo speak for itself!

through vogue italia, franca sozzani, and the magic of instagram I have been able to connect with some really creative and inspiring people. last month, my friend ivana zannini came to visit from london. after a couple of years of chatting through social media, it was so exciting to actually meet her, in real life. from the beginning, ivana has always been a huge supporter of my photography and all the creative endeavors I engage myself in, so it was really nice to have some days to chat and to work on some photo projects together. ivana also has an amazing sense of style and like myself, she has an appreciation for fashion, photography, but above all, style. in addition, she also understands the beauty of hiding behind a hat. after all, its always important to keep a sense of mystery. for her last day in california, I wanted to take her to the beach. she had never been, so I knew she would appreciate all the natural beauty of the ocean. I didn't really say that she should wear something specific, but I loved how she just showed up in this eye-catching, dramatic hat. immediately, I was inspired by its shape and silhouette and knew I wanted to do something noir chic. ivana is always so kind and told me that any photo I had in mind she would do....and just like that I thought with the beach waves behind her and that lovely hat brim covering her face we could create something magical. I tend to work by instinct and I was just really inspired by the simplicity of this moment. it almost felt like our good bye moment in a bitter sweet way, but I knew that this would not be our last moment together and that I will see her again. so on that note, I must thank her for all the inspiration she brought me in the last month. very rare too meet inspiring people like her, but I am so glad to call her my friend. its really amazing how vogue italia and social media brought us together...such a small world when you think about it!

yes, we are now in the middle of the fall/winter 2015 season, but I am still stuck on many spring/summer collections from earlier this year. I try to stay in the now, but when it comes to the runway, I tend to be all over the place. for some reason, when I was on the beach last week with my friend ivana I couldn't help but think of the rosie assoulin collection from spring 2015. ivana's hat had such a look and shape that seemed straight from that season. the funny part is that I never mentioned that collection to her, as we love to talk about style, clothes, and hats, especially. I must admit that ivana was the one who made me aware of those jw anderson black hats for spring 2015...so I wonder if she is familiar with this rosie assoulin collection. either way, whether she knows it or not, this was the image I used as inspiration for that hat moment, we had on the beach. I just love the drama of that straw brim and the alluring mystery of this image. when I stare at this photo, it makes me think about the girl under the hat and who she might be, but I love that you can't figure it out. I always find that there is beauty in not knowing and this photo captures that, so well. I guess you could say this is noir chic at its finest. personally, I am quite envious of this nicole cohen photograph because it really is something special. on a side note, if you have never seen this rosie assoulin spring/summer 2015 collection I highly suggest you check it out. yes, the hats are stunning, but the dress silhouettes are very eye catching, as well. by far, one of my favorites of this year!

I've been waiting for the right day to showcase my favorite black dress of 2015 and with today being black friday, I couldn't think of a more appropriate time, to do so. this past june, I happened to wander in the rag & bone store and saw a beautiful black dress hanging on a wall. I glanced at it and loved the ethereal quality, but I wasn't quite sure how it would look on me. I am very particular with dramatic dresses and I get lazy when I have to do a lot of tailoring. sometimes, I just want a simple black dress with no complication. I must admit I thought this dress would be difficult to wear and perhaps something that might look good only on a supermodel and not a real person, but when I tried it on, I was stunned by how uncomplicated it was. its loose, flowy, but above all dramatic, yet completely wearable. its the kind of dress you can wear on a sunday afternoon, but also to a fancy occasion. personally, I love a dress that is versatile and I knew when I bought that it could go, both ways. since the summer, I have been wearing this dress non-stop. usually in the day, I like to pair it with my j.crew sandals and my black lace parasol and for evenings I like to jazz it up with my silver head chain. I am actually wearing it in the photo, but since I made the image black and white I am not sure if the chain is that visible. either way, this has been my favorite splurge of the year, and I feel no guilt about it, even though it was a bit expensive, but I know in the long run, that I will be wearing this dress, for years to come. I must thank rag & bone for this amazing dress and for introducing me to their label. to be honest, I was a bit unfamiliar with this line, till that day I went into their store. its interesting how you find things when you least expect it....especially inspiring black frocks, like this!

the inspiration for my rag & bone dress photo moment came from this annie leibovitz image that I discovered over the summer. I am not sure who the woman is behind that dress, but I love the mystery of it all. it leaves so much for the imagination and I can't help but admire the way that black dress drapes her body. I have no idea why I respond to photos like this, but I think there is something very appealing about an elusive woman wearing black, not seeing her face, and looking noir chic. I mean no surprise really, I started sister's in black frocks, all based upon that concept. at any rate, getting back to the photo, I think the way annie leibovitz played with light and shadow is quite mesmerizing and I couldn't help but take some photo and style inspiration while conceiving an image with my rag & bone dress. I don't think my image looks that similar, but I just wanted to do something that shows the enigma, beauty, and elegance, of a black dress. I think annie leibovitz does it so well with this photo and what I admire most about her photography is the way she captures so much texture through fabric....its a common theme she does with many of her photos especially for vogue and vanity fair. layouts that come to mind, are kirsten dunst in her marie antoinette layout for us vogue back in september 2006 and cate blanchett for vanity fair back in february 2009. those two editorials, in particular, play with fabric and textures so well, and I also appreciate all that high-fashion drama. for some reason, I am very much inspired by that kind of style, these days. hope you can see what I am saying through this photo and some of her other elegant works. in the end, I just think its all about finding inspiring images from other stylemakers and making it all your own.

I have been feeling quite inspired by the look and style of the southwest. I must admit visiting sante fe, new mexico last year, was probably one of the most magical places that I have ever been to. I was just so taken by the scenery and the way some of the native women dressed and adorned themselves. the funny part is that I never thought it would have such an effect on me, but it has. it also helps when I look through editorials and see films, that take place in the southwest. my whole thing is just to take a little from everything and make it all my own. case in point, I have a very stylish friend named coleman dobson. we met earlier in the year at the john currin exhibit at the gagosian gallery. I noticed her immediately and thought she actually looked like one of his paintings. I asked her to pose for me in front of one of his artworks and she did. interestingly, eight months later, I noticed her in my dance class and told her that I photographed her at that exhibit. she very much remembered that night and for some reason, after that dance class and some talking, we have become friends and have collaborated on various photo projects, together. I would say she is the opposite of noir chic in that she likes to wear pale colors with a victorian 1920's twist, but for some reason our styles, match well together. a couple of weeks ago, I had in mind in doing something with a southwestern feel and with her old fashioned style, I thought this might work. I found some sand texture outside the los angeles county of museum art and took some photos. she wore a balenciaga ruffled skirt and paired it with a vintage silk button down top. I also like the simplicity of her hair bun and how she is looking away from the camera. too me, this feels 1920s southwestern, with a little cinematic, prada influence. we took many photos that day, but this one is my favorite. I guess you could say this is my interpretation of how I see the southwest. I will be heading back to new mexico in 2016, but till then I must thank my friend coleman, for modeling and doing something retro-southwest, with me.

mango summer 2013

when I say inspiration is everywhere.....I very much mean it. interestingly, before I photographed my friend coleman I found myself looking through the mango summer 2013 catalogue. I don't really shop at this store, but I must say they make stylish catalogues from time to time, and this one in particular, caught my eye, immediately. the catalogue was shot entirely in the desert and features model edita vilkeviciute posing in exotic sand dunes dressed in bohemian style looks, mostly white and denim. this was my favorite just because I love the contrast of that desert sand and the way her white dress flows against it. this is such an ethereal moment and I love the mystery of it all. it doesn't even feel like a mango look. personally, I could see this being something from the row, but in the end, what it shows is that you can be chic with anything you wear, it doesn't have to be super expensive, all it has to be unique, individual, with an element of style. I don't know if you can see exact correlations between this mango image and my photo with coleman, but I was very much inspired by the texture of this dress and that beautiful scenery. sometimes, I think the best photos, are not so much about the outfit, but more about finding the right scenery to make the clothes stand out. I think this one does that and so much more!

since january, I have been taking guitar lessons. it is something that I have been wanting to get back into, after playing for a short time in my early teens. I think because of school and studying I just felt overwhelmed and decided to put it aside. at any rate, I feel that now that I am older, the timing is quite right in my life. yes, I am preoccupied with work and other activities, but I love the feeling of learning an instrument. I must admit guitar is not easy all the time and it is a bit of commitment to sit down and learn everything, but in the end it feels so rewarding, especially when you didn't think it was possible. in the last 10 months, that I have been playing, I have managed to learn led zeppelin's stairway to heaven and now I am onto my favorite amy winehouse song entitled what it is on guitar, which is beyond difficult. how I managed to do all this in less than a year is bonkers, but I think its always important to challenge yourself to new things, even if it can be a little scary. I like stepping out of my comfort zone from time to time, whether it be with fashion and trying a new look, or taking up a new hobby. I would by no means call myself a guitar professional, but I can at least style myself into one. of course, I had to take my oliver peoples sunnies and bathrobe to create a rock n' roll noir chic image. I don't know if it came out that way....but in my eyes the idea of playing guitar in my bathrobe and sunnies seems pretty cool me!

as you know I take inspiration from just about everything and for some time now, I have been admiring this photo of U2's bono, playing guitar in his bathrobe. I just love the casual chic feeling that this image conveys. you can tell that bono most likely just woke up in the morning and decided to play his guitar. the brilliant part is that somehow, anton corbjin managed to capture this quiet moment. personally, I love this era of anton corbjin, especially what he snapped of U2. he really did some amazing photo works with the band, and I love how it was all done in black and white. there is something about anton corbjin's style that I just find so appealing and when I think of rock n' roll noir chic, I certainly think of this image. so naturally, I wanted to do my own version. of course, I am by no means bono, but I can definitely take some style inspiration and pretend like I am just as cool as him. the best part is that all that is needed to re create this photo, is a guitar and a bathrobe and just like that you can be bono. on a side note, I must admit that whenever I wake-up and play my guitar in the morning this is the pic and persona that pops in my head as I warm up. so naturally, I had to do something like this, as I think this is the ultimate casual-chic guitar moment, that I find so relatable to my everyday life.

the hunt for that perfect black ensemble is always a continuous one and I try to keep my eyes open to whatever noir chic style inspiration crosses my path. case in point, about a year ago I stumbled across a style blogger named zina charkoplia. she is from barcelona, spain and she runs a style blog called the fashionvibe. from time to time, I look at her style blog, but I am more intrigued by her outfits that she wears to fashion shows. last year, I showcased one of her black dresses during paris week and this year I find myself yet again inspired by another one of her outfits that she wore during paris fashion week. I guess this is the city where she likes to show off, her best looks. yes, I know paris fashion week was about a month and some weeks ago, but I am just now catching up and when I saw her in this black tailored coat dress I immediately did a double take. I just love that silhouette and how it fits so perfectly to her figure. it looks so classic, yet completely modern, and I love how she accessorized her dress with those sleek black oversized sunnies. I for sure, would do the same. when I think of street noir chic this is exactly what comes to mind and in case you were wondering zina charkoplia's dress is designed by ashi studio. I was very unfamiliar with this label, but after doing a little bit of research, I found out that he is a designer based in beirut and is mostly known for designing sharp cut silhouettes, that feel very couture. also, what is quite interesting about this designer is that practically all his looks are in white, so I am surprised that zina charkoplia is wearing something of his, in black. at any rate, the tailoring of her coat dress is superb and it very much reminds of something raf simons would design for dior and even when he was at jil sander. maybe I could also see a little bit of valentino with his design aesthetic. whatever it may be, this is the kind of street style that I love seeing outside fashion shows and if you are new to zina charkoplia's style as well as, ashi studio both are two, too get familiar with. this is truly what tailored noir chic is all about....so happy too discover this!

balloons & lace

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about how I have been admiring porter magazine. the winter issue is loaded with beautiful black dresses and the one that has been on my mind for awhile now, is this black lace valentino haute couture as seen on actress marion cotillard. I don't know why I am so taken by this dress, but I am. there is such an ethereal flow to the way this gown looks that I find so mesmerizing. I also like her body language and how she is looking to the camera and covering her mouth. when I think of incognito chic, this is what comes to mind and let's also not forget how she is holding a string of blue balloons. personally, I think balloons are the best accessory for any ensemble and if you remember a couple of months ago I did a whole photo series with balloons on the beach, so this was quite refreshing too see. there really is something whimsical about balloons and photography, especially when it is styled with the right dress, like this valentino one. I could probably go on and on about this pic, but I think by just looking at this image you can see all the beauty that I have described. we finally see a celebrity on the cover and the editorial actually exceeds my expectations. brava to porter magazine and to think I just discovered this magazine while waiting in line at the supermarket.....I guess sometimes interesting discoveries happen when you least expect it!

I seem to be on a dramatic black dress with drapery high all this week because of my new ronen chen black dress. at any rate, I caught myself looking through the october issue of vogue australia magazine and stumbled upon an editorial entitled still life. the layout features model waleska gorczevski in a sublime layout shot somewhere in the desert wearing fall's most dramatic looks. I think the desert setting certainly adds a little something extra to her wardrobe, which is why I think I responded so strongly, to this layout. out of all the images, this was my favorite for obvious reasons. I love the way her black dress flows in that background it really is such a stunning contrast. I also love that tan turban scarf that she is wearing, as well....it adds just the right amount of pop to her cape dress. there is just something so hypnotic about this image and it reinforces the idea of why I love wearing black and how a black silhouette can never be boring, that is, if you know how to style and wear the look properly. this was just one of the gorgeous photos from the editorial and if you love a dramatic, southwestern georgia o'keefe approach to dressing I suggest you take a look at this one. personally, skimming through this layout reminded me of my inspiring time last year in santa fe, new mexico and how much I missed the serenity of the desert. as much as I love observing style in the city I think there is something kind of magical about emptiness in a southwestern desert. next year, I plan on going back and this will certainly be my main source of inspiration....thank you vogue australia for not boring me, unlike many other publications!

this weekend my sister and I went shopping in the abbot kinney area in venice and went into a shop called ruti. we have been in the store on many occasions, but this time their clothes were really something special. perhaps, because their fall clothes were in and I just might have a preference for more dark and dramatic ensembles with lots of drapery. whatever it was, I just love finding unique statement pieces and this store did just that and more. lately, I have been feeling bored by shopping, but something about the clothes at ruti, made me fall in love with fashion, again. I tried on three amazing dresses, but this one was my favorite. it is actually called the bubble dress and it was designed by ronen chen. he is an israeli designer and I love how structured, modern, and sleek this dress is. it has a very classic, yet fashion-forward look to it, but I must say that turtleneck and the drapery around the arms and back are the best part. I like dresses to fit in a certain way and this has something very unique to it. it makes me think of yohji yamamoto, ann demeulemeester, and maybe a little alber elbaz for lanvin. I guess you could say there are elements of all three of those designers in this dress, but I really think he has a design aesthetic that is all his own. as of now, I am doing a little bit of research on ronan chen and came across a quote by him in which he said....in fashion, you don’t sell just the clothes you sell a dream. I couldn't believe more in that philosophy and I must thank him for inspiring me with his designs, particular this black frock.....this was just the noir chic that I needed! on a side note, if you are a fan of this dress do check out the ruti site.....so much to discover in this store!

a couple of days before I found my ronan chen dress I just happen to find myself skimming through the chalayan fall/winter 2015 collection. to be completely honest, I didn't even know that hussein chalayan was still designing, as I don't keep that up with fashion shows, so this was such a pleasant surprise too see this collection....as I have always admired how structured and architectural his designs are. who could forget that table that he turned into a dress back in fall of 2000. at any rate, this is my favorite dress from his current fall season. from shoulder to floor, I love the way that dress drapes and for some strange reason, it made me think of my new ronan chen dress, even though my dress isn't as long. I just think the drapery and the fluidity are so similar. I found this image of model sasha pivovarova wearing this dress in the current winter issue of porter magazine and I love how it was chosen as one of the key pieces of the season. I mean when does a dramatic black dress ever go out of style? I know its a look not for everyone, but I would gladly wear this in a heartbeat. if you haven't seen this chalayan fall/winter 2015 collection do check it out as I think there are many dramatic, polished, and comfortable winter looks that I find so appealing. also, if you haven't seen this new issue of porter magazine layout I highly suggest skimming through it. the whole issue is inspiring, including the cover and layout featuring marion cotillard. finally, a magazine that puts a celebrity on the cover that is photographed and styled to perfection.....it feels so rare to find that these days!

I took a break from writing due to the fact that I went out of town and needed a little vacation. sometimes, I question the photo projects I do and to be completely honest sometimes I wonder if I am getting a little repetitive when I write. I mean can I take my love of wearing black to a higher level? what that all means doesn't really matter, but its nice to have a place where I can state my opinion and showcase my ideas. at any rate, I have been feeling like I have been in a creative funk, for awhile. I know I will have more stories to share and get back into the swing of things, but for now I will leave you, with this image. earlier this week, I posted my illy coffee and vogue italia selected image, which was such an honor, but a couple of days ago, I found myself skimming through the september issue of vogue italia and found this photo of myself, inside the magazine. my sister took it of me, on the beach, from this summer. of course, I had to edit and noir chic it and later I submitted it for the dream photo challenge. it wasn't selected for the contest, but franca sozzani, somehow included it in the issue with a bunch of other images, from other photographers, that embodied the concept of dream. I was shocked too see many of my beach photos that I took, inside the issue but this one of me, in my $80 bathing suit, that I bought in santa barbara from a couple of years ago, made me do a double take. the whole situation is absurd, but in the end, I guess it reinforced the idea that I should keep doing what I do. even if my concepts don't feel that innovative, I assume I just have to do what feels right in terms of style and inspiration. to be completely honest, I don't really know about how many followers I have on my blog, or who actually reads what I say, but I guess seeing this photo in vogue italia made me realize that I do have a place in this world. so to all my readers, thanks for understanding my point of view but please know even if I am the only one who reads this...I will still keep writing, styling, and photographing. in the end, you have to do what makes you happy, even if nobody gets it.

perhaps, the reason why I did a double take when I saw that photo of me on the beach in the september issue of vogue italia was that I was very much inspired by mariacarla boscono and an editorial she did with peter lindbergh for the february 2014 issue of vogue italia. the layout features mariacarla boscono all in black, wandering around sicily. some of it, is shot on the beach, but its mostly her in black ensembles walking around the island. there are also men too, in black, who act as amazing extras. I was very much inspired by her body language and just how natural she looked, that I wanted to convey that, with my image. there is no exact correlation between the two, but I definitely wanted to pay homage to that dark noir chic style that peter lindbergh, does so well. there is something about that way he captures moments, that I find so captivating. I remember actually telling my sister to try and do something peter lindbergh with me, as I walked on the beach with my sunnies and parasol. I have no idea if franca sozzani saw some similarities between the two and I highly doubt she did, but its really quite funny that my inspiration, actually came from the pages of vogue italia. I guess what this all shows you is that inspiration is truly everywhere and that we all take from something. or that you can take an image, see something in it, and make it all your own. if you have never seen this layout I highly suggest reminiscing back on this one, as it may be my all time favorite peter lindbergh, editorial. this opening image of mariacarla boscono with her hand placed over her head in that black frock....is the the epitome of noir chic and just how striking one can be, if they have the perfect black dress, on.

my selected dream photo

this past july, franca sozzani, the editor-in-chief of vogue italia held a photo contest all based upon the concept of dream. immediately, I was drawn to this theme mostly because I find myself living in my own dream world. sometimes, I wonder what planet I am living on and why I find such ordinary moments so intriguing. I know there are other people out there who feel the same, but its something I never really have conversations about, I just like to capture the moment and do my thing. at any rate, franca sozzani was not very specific with what she was looking for, but I knew she was looking for a magical moment, a detail, or just something that the photographer finds inspiring. of course, for fun, I entered the contest, and for some reason, one of my photographs was selected. this past february, I found myself wandering around little toyko in downtown los angeles and happened to notice a teenage couple. they seemed so in love and I just thought I would spontaneously, catch this moment of them, from behind. it was a very sunny day and I remember the way their shadows touched the ground. personally, I thought it was an endearing moment and decided to photograph it. I have an obsession with shadows and when I find some that are eye catching it really makes my day. I did a lot of editing with this photo to get that noir chic feeling, but I am glad franca sozzani was able too see the beauty and simplicity of this moment. words can't also express how exciting it is to be 1 of 20 images selected and perhaps the best part is that our photos are part of an exhibition at the illy store in milan and florence, which runs 'til january of 2016. our images are displayed on the wall and are also printed on postcards, which are all at the illy store. the whole thing is a bit overwhelming, but I feel so honored to be featured among these amazing photographers. last week, a dear friend of mine, sent me this photo of the illy store in milan and I was so touched by his kind words and his beautiful photo. he is an amazing photographer himself, and a complete visionary, so for him to share this with me, really meant a lot. when I think about how this all happened it still is over my head, but I feel so grateful. I must thank vogue italia, franca sozzani, and of course all the people, who support me and my creative endeavors.

the other night, I attended the art opening for the urs fischer show at the gagosian gallery. most of the time, when I attend these events I don't really expect much. I just like to look at the art, put on a nice dress, and observe style, that is if I see anything worth while. of course, I like to take photos with the art, but most of the time, I am with my camera phone snapping photos of what I may find interesting and could be a source of style inspiration. I must admit that even though I attend these art events, I don't find that I fit into them, as I am not an actress, singer, and I don't really think of myself as a photographer. I just like to think of myself as a curator of style, in my free time. I have no idea if that makes sense, but I just think I am being me. I like to be elusive and to remain a mystery, if I can. at any rate, at the gagosian gallery, I met brad elterman, who is a los angeles photographer, who works for purple diary and he asked to take my photo. he told me that I look way more new york than los angeles, which made me laugh. we chatted for a bit and he snapped this image of me. I told him I wanted to leave my sunglasses on and he agreed that I should. he said it would be very chic that way, but in my head I was thinking I better just keep it noir chic as that is all I know how to do. I was very surprised the next day too see my photo featured on the site, and what it all means, I don't know and I won't let it get to my head, but I guess andy warhol was right when he said in the future everybody will be famous for 15 minutes....I guess now is my moment!

last week, I did the unimaginable I bought myself a bikini. I don't want to hate on bikinis, but I have always been a one piece swimsuit kind of girl. I just feel more comfortable covering up and I always think you reveal more by showing less. at any rate, my sister informed about a company called cupshe, which is an international online retailer of fashion and beauty. I think they are most known for their bikinis because they are actually quite chic and very affordable. when I say affordable, please believe me.....I bought this one for just $15. I figured at this price it must be ill fitted, but I was totally wrong. in fact, it fits like a glove and I love the way this bikini plays with lines. I actually think the back is the best part, so that is why I wanted to emphasis that section. I actually wore it on the beach, this past labor day and I was quite pleased by how comfortable and chic it was. this is my first time wearing a bikini on the beach and it totally exceeded my expectations. of course, I wanted to do a noir chic inspired moment to mark the occasion and I think this pretty much captures the beauty of the bikini, but also the magic and mystery of a little quiet time on the beach. plus, I love the harshness of my shadow...that to me is the highlight of this photo. yes, I know that's a little strange too say, but I love a good silhouette. if for some reason, you are thinking about purchasing a bikini or any kind of bathing suit, I highly suggest checking out the cupshe website. as I always say cheap, yet chic, never goes out of style!

back to the beach

for about a month now, I have been obsessing over this image of a random girl on the beach, in a dramatic dress. I have searched high and low to try and find out who photographed this, but I have no idea. personally, I think this looks very peter lindbergh, maybe even a little patrick demarchelier for harper's bazaar back in the 90's, but I can't seem to figure it out. at any rate, whoever photographed it, must be super proud of this, because I think its a marvelous image. I just love the body language and the way her dress just melts into the beach. its almost like ocean waves and I think I just love the feeling that this photo evokes. at any rate, I very much had this image in mind, when I was on the beach this past labor day. I knew I wanted to capture something with my back and the lines of my bikini in the same way that this dress does, with her crossing lines. yes, I know they are not very similar, but I think there is a connecting noir chic allure, that both of these photos have. I don't think I will ever find out who the photographer is, on this image, but I really don't care, I just love finding inspiring pics like this, that force me to go out and take on my own photo projects. too me, that is what matters most!

the towel turban

when summer starts to wind down and labor day approaches I somehow think about one of my all-time favorite looks, the towel turban. last year, I did a whole story on towel turbans and its funny how I still am very much inspired by this look. yes, we all put one on when we get out of the shower, but I have always felt there is something so chic about twisting one up. in fact, the bigger the towel turban....the better! at any rate, earlier this summer, I thought about glamming up my towel turban with my manolo blahniks, oliver peoples sunnies, and a copy of the may issue of vogue paris. its interesting what ideas you can come up with while lounging by the pool, especially when there are clean towels by your side. there really wasn't much plan with this, but I just felt like it had something very fresh and summery about it and I love the relaxed, nothing can go wrong feeling, that a towel turban has, when you put one on. I must thank my sister for capturing the moment and I love that pop of yellow in the background and how it somehow corresponds with that issue of vogue paris. I believe the accessories certainly add a little something extra to my towel turban. if you have never done this look, I highly suggest trying it and if you have not seen mario testino's towel photos series, definitely have a look. its nice to know that I am not the only one who finds this look, the highest of chic.

thierry mugler spring/summer 2015

for some reason the phrase no white after labor day got me thinking about my favorite suit of the season. what those words actually mean, makes no sense to me, as I would gladly wear a suit like this, all year round, that is if I actually owned one. in case you don't know this is from the thierry mugler spring/summer 2015 collection. even though fashion critics didn't care too much for this season, I certainly did and I love the sporty vibe that david koma is bringing to the label. yes, I know its a whole new direction for the label, but sometimes change can be a good thing. a couple of months ago, I featured a sleek cut-out black dress with a bond-girl sensibility, that was one of my favorites. it reminded me of something donna karan or even tom ford would design, so that is probably why I found it so appealing. at any rate, let's get back to this suit. what I admire about it, is that it looks like a ysl le smoking suit with that skinny pant and blazer, but what makes it so modern, is that white body suit with cut outs, underneath. this is sleek minimalism at its finest and I love the whole futuristic aspect that this ensemble creates. I don't know about you, but I would so would wear this all year, no matter the season. sometimes, its good to go against the rules and not follow ridiculous phrases like no white after labor day, especially when you have a cutting-edge thierry mugler suit, like this!

last weekend, my sister and I went walking around the los angeles county museum of art. we didn't actually go to the museum, but just casually strolled around the outside starting from the la brea tarpits. for some reason, lately I have been inspired by space and distance. in fact, I kind of have an obsession with finding open space. I think it all started with my appreciation for visual artist shirin neshat. she does some beautiful shots of women in burqas wandering on a beach, from a distance. I don't know why I find her imagery so beautiful and inspiring, but I do and I feel like the world is feeling so overpopulated that I think I have somewhat grown fascinated by emptiness. at times, it can feel like there is no room to move anymore. I don't know if that has something to do with me living in los angeles, or just kind of appreciating the idea of open space, but whatever it may be, I just feel the need to take advantage of finding openness and turning it into a photo project. it actually has been a while since I last wore my ann demeulemeester black dress, so I was glad it matched with this moment. I told my sister to capture the silhouette and essence of my dress, but to also get the distance and of course, those palm trees. even though this was photographed in california, I feel like there is something middle eastern about it. perhaps, it has something with the black and white theme and those trees, but whatever it was, I was glad my sister caught my shadows and that far away noir chic. personally, I don't think a great photo has to always be so close up, sometimes mystery can be more a little more alluring!

there is a great website entitled NOWNESS that features unique videos in arts and culture from around the world. occasionally, they share photos and I was quite taken with this image that I found recently on the site. I have no idea who photographed this or who made that dress that this model is wearing, but I so love the whole ambiance that this photo exudes. there is so much mystery and I don't know why I find the idea of someone in black wandering through space so stylish, but I do. it just makes me happy too see this type of look represented in fashion but also in everyday life. if someone were to ask me how could I go about doing a noir chic look.....I would say just have a look at this photograph. sometimes, you find inspiring imagery when you least expect it and this certainly was one of those photos that just came out of nowhere. I certainly had this in mind when I went to the los angeles county museum of art last week and wandered outside, in that open space. I don't know if there is an exact correlation between the two images, but I think they both show just how stunning a black dress can be, even when from a distance. too me, that is what noir chic is all about. at any rate, if you are unfamiliar with NOWNESS certainly check out that site. you can always find something inspiring, whether in fashion, film, art, or design.....this was certainly, one of those noir chic gems!

teepee time

this past weekend my sister put a teepee in her backyard and I must say I find it so stylish in a very native american and ethereal way. I don't know if teepee's have become a major trend in home design, but my sister made it work in her own unique and creative manner that she does, so well. at any rate, my sister and I spent some time inside the teepee and were quite taken with the light and space. its actually quite fun and relaxing to spend time in there....who knew it could be such an escape. at any rate, for some reason, my sister and I felt inspired to take some photos inside the teepee. my sister is usually the one taking the photos of me, so it felt good for me to snap some pics of her. of course, I had to do some quick styling and was thinking she should do something zen. this was my favorite one with her just because I love how serene this moment is and I love the texture of her vintage lace poncho, that she recently bought. the detail of that poncho is quite superb and I think it matches her style completely, even with that carpet she is sitting on. plus, I love how all the textures somehow work together. there is something very 70's stevie nicks about this, that I so like. perhaps, its the vintage poncho, her hair, or just the earthiness of it all. whatever it may be, I love these impromptu photo moments that I share with my sister. they don't happen that often, especially with her as the model, but I so appreciate the creative-chic moments we somehow conjure up together....she is quite the teepee beauty, glad to capture the moment!

sometimes, I feel like I may be getting a little bit crazy with details. I assume there are a lot people who can understand that concept, especially if you like to create, but lately I have been quite obsessed with finding shadows. I have no idea why I find them so stylish, but I do, and especially within black and white photography, I think it can be quite mesmerizing. I have always loved black and white films, so I assume there is something cinematic that I find quite appealing about shadows and maybe I can associate it with that. whatever it may be, plain and simple, I just like finding interesting silhouettes. case in point, recently, I was walking mid-afternoon and happened to notice this interesting wall design outside the saint laurent store. for some reason, I saw my reflection on this wall and thought it would make for a unique photo. you have seen me before in this dkny skirt and norma kamali top, but I thought this ensemble worked quite well, with the texture of this wall. plus, I think there is a fluidity within this photo that makes it flow. I am very much inspired by natural moments and I like how it looks like how I just got caught in the wind. I assume there are many ways to interpret this photo, but I must say, I just like that shadow with my body language. I am all for finding unique noir chic moments like this and I know that to most people this is not exciting, but too me, I like finding mysterious beauty within my everyday life. that's the only way I know how to live.....through style!

I am constantly studying photography to find inspiration and my love for black and white photography is one that I feel quite passionate about. I love how I can always find something and while I can never copy the images I love, I can always take something from it and make it my own. recently, I discovered a young hungarian photographer named noell s. oszvald. she is still in her twenties, but her eye seems quite mature for her age. her work is mostly black a white self-portraits focused on form, composition, and content. what I appreciate most about her work is how she contrasts shadows and ghostly landscapes to create such a dark and emotional impact. all her work is quite profound, but this one has been on my mind and I think when I walked past that saint laurent store and saw my shadow on the wall, I thought about this image. I know they are completely different images, but I think there are some obscure shadow connections. I am quite taken with the silhouette of her skirt and the way that black bird, somehow blends into her. how she conceived this image, I still cannot figure out, but I think this is total noir chic to the next level. if you are unfamiliar with her work, definitely check her out. this is just one of her amazing images, as I totally admire her dark cinematic approach to photography.

I do not want to bore my readers with a film review, but I just have too say I was deeply moved by the new amy winehouse documentary. in fact, I have seen it twice in the theatre, which is very rare for me to do. I must admit when I first heard rehab many years ago I was not impressed, but when I listened to her whole back to black album and heard songs like love is a losing game, wake up alone, and some unholy war I was quite taken by her raw emotional depth, witty lyrics, and her darkness. I am not very moved by many musicians these days and its not that I don't like new music because I do, but I rarely ever find music that can affect me in such a way, like amy winehouse did. the film, which was directed by asif kapadia, masterfully pieces together her life from the beginning without editorializing. we see her starting out as a young jazz musician with her first album frank and how she catapulted into fame with back to black. the film is pieced together through her words, her music, her voicemails, her home videos, her friends, her family, and her tormentors. at times, the film is heartbreaking to watch with her battle with drugs, alcohol, and bulimia, but I loved how she put all her personal pain and her drama into her lyrics. amy winehouse had a lot of demons, but I have always thought she was quite profound with her words.....she was a true artist in every sense! if you are a fan of her music I highly recommend this film just because her music from both albums is played throughout the entire film and we see how every song she wrote, affected her life in some deep and discerning way. I have always felt some strange connection to her music, voice, style, and I feel like this film certainly celebrates her life and her talent. I guess you could say she had me at back to black....after all, how could I resist an album title, like that!

I've been sticking with my philosophy that yellow is the new black for this season....all because of my new vintage yellow silk lanvin dress that I found at decades earlier this year. lets also not forget the way charlize theron looked at the cannes film festival in a sleek yellow christian dior dress, this past may. I don't know why, but I have been seeing some beautiful ways to wear this color this season, that has me seeing this hue in a whole new light. case in point, I have had the may issue of vogue paris siting on my desk for a couple of months now, but I have just had the time now, too absorb the issue, more closely. one layout that caught my eye in particular is entitled the body, which features model doutzen kroes looking sporty chic in black and yellow ensembles. my favorite look is the opening image, which features the back of her in this yellow ralph lauren leather trench coat. I must say this wasn't my favorite ralph lauren collection, but I liked pieces from this spring 2015 season, including the jodhpurs and hats. I remember seeing this coat on the runway, but for some reason, it didn't catch my eye, the way it did in this layout. its funny how a different setting can change the whole look, perspective, and concept of an outfit. perhaps, it is the contrast of that beach background with that pop of yellow that really makes this image so breathtaking. whatever it may be, I just love staring at this photo. this is one of my favorite images of 2015 and if you haven't seen this editorial, do check it out as there is a beautiful sporty chic feeling conveyed within each image, but this ralph lauren yellow coat, is by far, the star ensemble!

I have come to the point in my life where I have realized that I am not going to save my nice clothes for a fancy occasion. I mean life is short and I hate seeing my nice clothes just sitting in the closet. for some reason, I have been feeling like if I want to put something fancy on I will just go out and wear it, even if its simply to do some grocery shopping. its probably more ideal to save your nice attire for a black tie event, but personally, if I wait around for that, they will never get worn. I must admit that I probably spend too much time reading fashion editorials or maybe I live in my own imaginary world of turning my everyday life into photo shoots, but I have been wanting to wear my new dkny layered skirt, norma kamali crop top, and manolo blahniks to the market, for some time now. I don't know why, but from the moment, I tried this skirt on, I felt like it had a classic dior look to it and I thought with me pushing a shopping cart it would look quite retro and chic. I have always found supermarkets stylish in a pop art kind of way, especially in the fruit aisle. I think the lighting tends to be better in that section and I love the way fruits and vegetables look together....it must have something to do with the use of color and shape. whatever it may be, I decided to go to my favorite grocery store in los angeles and quickly style this one, together. interestingly, I chose the meat section, because I liked the use of space and the lighting seemed quite perfect. plus, the words written above, really added a little something extra, to this photo. I also thought with my hand on my sunnies and the other on the shopping cart, it would make for an incognito chic moment. sometimes, I wonder if I am a little fashion crazy with the things I come up with, but I figure just have fun with your wardrobe, no matter where you go. style is certainly all around us, its just a matter of finding it and incorporating it into your life!

there will always be a fashion editorial that serves as inspiration for my photo projects and for my market shoot I totally thought of this image and editorial from the september 2008 issue of US vogue. it is called 2-for-1 special and I like how it pokes fun of how you should dress and behave at the supermarket. the entire editorial features supermodels amber valletta and kirsty hume running wild throughout the market dressed in sleek dresses with juxtaposing colors. what is so great about this layout is the way their fashions contrasts with the vibrant colors of the market. hats off to stylist edward enninful for masterfully putting this one together and to steven meisel who can make any situation chic. personally, I love the way those shopping carts are used as accessories. this was my favorite look from the editorial just because I love the use of space, their expression, and how they look so chic just to simply go shopping. I actually love to observe style when I go to the market. occasionally, I spot someone interesting, but never something like this, but it is still a good place to observe dress codes, or perhaps think in your head how fashionable the supermarket can actually be, with the right lighting, products, and a fancy dress with heels. if you haven't seen this editorial certainly check it out and I do suggest wearing your best outfit to do a little shopping.....when you try it, I think you will understand how in vogue, it can be!

recently, I was looking back at some of my photos and came across this image. last year, I posted an image of a woman named denise, that I randomly met on the beach. she was dressed all in black and I don't know why, but I felt the need to go up and talk to her. I guess her style seemed very sister's in black so naturally I was very fascinated. she was very friendly and right away we hit it off, in terms of style. she was actually in the beginning of starting a clothing line...I believe called sun bella. she kindly let me take some photos of her and I was quite taken with this poncho shawl that she was wearing. without her knowing I took this photo of her and I think it was my favorite moment from that day...just because the wind really captured something and I like how she is looking away. I also like the ethereal aspect of it and I don't know why, but I have always been quite intrigued by drapery in motion. perhaps, it comes from my love of designers like yohji yamamoto or ann demeuleemester who tend to capture that type of quality within their designs. personally, I think this moment very much captured her noir chic sensibility. it is so rare to meet people like her and I love how almost a year later I still find myself inspired by her style. perhaps, this is a sign that I should invest in one of her black poncho shawls.....whatever it may be, I love meeting and photographing stylish women in black, like denise!

I am on a quest to find inspiring images from editorials. as I have stated before, it is really difficult these days, as many layouts don't have that je ne sais quoi that they use to have. or maybe they do and I am just being cynical. its funny how when I was growing up, I so looked forward to skimming through the pages of vogue and harper's bazaar....don't get me wrong, I still look through these magazines and occasionally I can find something interesting, but it feels like nowadays I have too find style inspiration from other sources and not so popular magazines. case in point, there is a magazine I just discovered called heaven magazine. I actually haven't seen this layout in real life, but I came across it by looking into a photographer I like named sébran d’argent. this is my current favorite image of his, and it comes from the fall 2013 issue. this model for some reason, reminded me very much of denise, the woman I met on the beach, last year. I just love this hat and her asymmetrical dress. I have no idea who designed this look, but it feels very yohji yamamoto too me, and I like how her hair covers her face and all that mystery that this photo conveys. this is the epitome of noir chic and I love how when I feel like I can't find anything inspiring, something like this catches my eye. the whole layout is quite moody and romantic. am thinking I will probably share more from this editorial in the future, but for now.....this is what I am feeling.

I love when I get to have an impromptu photo shoot with my mom as she has an amazing sense of style, but she is usually too busy to take some pics, so when I get a chance to have a moment with her, I fully embrace it. a couple of weeks ago, my mom wore this stunning kaftan by natori, that she bought last year. surprisingly, she never told me about it and this was the first time she wore it so naturally I was very much inspired by her look. I actually discovered her pajamas and kaftans while at bergdorf goodman this year in new york city and was quite taken by her designs as she takes casual chic to the next level. my mom's kaftan is cotton silk and I loved the way it draped to her figure. she wanted to wear my new asian inspired BCBG black hat with her natori kaftan, so naturally I told her we would have to take some photos, if she wanted to wear my hat. she agreed and while walking around her beach house I came up with this, as I thought, the staircase with silhouette added something extra to her look. I love how we see the texture of her kaftan and that hat shadow across her face. it is a very noir chic moment and I love the mystery she is conveying in this image. I don't get to have many photo moments with my mom as she is quite shy, but I really treasure the stylish moments we share together and I was glad that she approved of this pic. on a side note, if you are unfamiliar with natori, check out her sleep wear and kaftans, I am very much inspired by how she mixes eastern and western culture with her designs, perhaps you will, too!

interestingly, the inspiration for my impromptu noir chic photo shoot with my mom came from this image I found in harper's bazaar germany from the march 2015 issue. in case you cannot tell the main influence for this photo and the entire layout came from the late diana vreeland. even though she is no longer alive her style still remains so iconic and I found this whole editorial, very influential, especially the black and white photos. this one in particular, caught my eye, immediately. first of all, I love the structure of that black hat and the way that hat shadow reflects across her face. the composition is stunning and I also like the brightness of that flower in her hair and how we see a glimpse of her distinct cheekbone. I have no idea if this photo took a long time to take, but it works on so many levels. I tried to do something with shade and shadow with my mom and her hat and I know there is no comparison, but I felt very inspired by this photograph. I also love the texture and pattern of that skirt as I think it adds a little something extra. for some reason, I thought with my mom's natori kaftan I could attempt the same with her pattern. I don't know if that makes sense, but I tried to take a little something from this photo. I am still quite new to photograper nagi sakai, but I love his work and I thought this entire layout was superb, perhaps one of my favorites, so far, in the year. if you have not seen this one, do check it out. I actually quite like looking through the international fashion magazines better than US ones these days.....sometimes, you can find an image or a look that can subconsciously inspire you, much like this exquisite, one!

the other day, I went to an art exhibit entitled theories on forgetting at the gagosian gallery and met a really stylish girl named ciel torres. her black dress caught my eye immediately, so naturally, I had to go over and ask her about it. I don't know if its strange to talk to people about what they are wearing, but I feel if you like what someone has on, you should go up to them and tell them. personally, I find it to be a huge compliment, when someone does that to me. interestingly, ciel didn't know who made her dress, but I thought it draped her figure to perfection and I love the asymmetrical aspect. ciel is an art curator and has a wonderful sense of style. I could tell right away by the way she walked in her dress. she just looked so comfortable and I loved how she wore the dress instead of the dress wearing her. she was a lovely example of noir chic. she kindly let me take this photo of her and I think it beautifully shows the silhouette and all that exquisite drapery. plus, I think her heels also add a sexy factor to her dress. I must thank ciel for the unexpected style inspiration....this was totally unplanned, but sometimes I think unexpected moments like this, are the most special and memorable!

mugler minimalism

for some reason, looking at ciel in her sleek black dress reminding me of one of my favorite spring/summer collections of 2015, thierry mugler. I know a lot of people had mixed feelings about this collection saying that designer david koma has completely gone in the opposite direction of thierry mugler, but I feel its one of my favorites. I tend to like what everybody hates anyway, so I could care less what fashion critics say. I know what looks good to me and this feels very close to my personal style. at any rate, I thought there was a bond-girl element within every look and I love the refined, sleek-minimalism. many of the ensembles were black and white, but I love how david koma used color in such a clean and polished way. for some reason, looking at this collection, I thought of tom ford fall 1996 with that famous white cut out dress as seen on model georgina grenville and also donna karan fall/winter 2003 as she also worked with cut outs and metal within fabric. I can definitely see an influence there, but I feel this is like a modern 2015 version. I have a lot favorite outfits from this mugler season, but this dramatic black dress is my favorite. I love the cut outs, the element of metal, and of course, that sexy leg showing with a high heel. I could easily see carine roitfeld wearing this look and the leg portion certainly makes me think of ciel's gorgeous black frock. that is probably why I asked her about her dress, thinking maybe it was from this collection. either way, I think there are distinct connections between the two, but above all they both show how noir chic will never go out of style. if you love cutting edge minimalism I highly suggest skimming through this collection.....very sister's in black frocks approved!

balloon mood

for some reason, the other week, I wandered into party city and decided to buy myself balloons. I don't know if that is strange, considering it wasn't my birthday or any other specific occasion, but I just thought they were so joyous and uplifting to look at, so why not have some in my life. interestingly, a couple of days before that, I read a quote from winnie the pooh that said "nobody can be un-cheered with a balloon!" I guess those words subconsciously inspired me to do something creative. so with that, I decided to put on my signature all black and recently purchased manolo blahniks and head to the beach. what I love most about walking on the beach is all that wind and with my balloons it really added some movement and fluidity. I was thinking of a southern california noir chic version of audrey hepburn in funny face for this photo and somehow I think all that, was somewhat captured. I have no idea if that makes sense, but I really love the feeling of carrying balloons and wearing high heels....there is just something kind of lovely about that concept. perhaps, I live in my own photo shoot fashion world, but I love the magic and fantasy of balloons. I know that some people like to buy flowers for themselves, but I think my new obsession is buying balloons. I think they are the ultimate chic accessory and I love how just by looking at them they can brighten your mood....sometimes, its the simple things that can have the most meaning!

handmade's tale

not only did I take some inspiration from the wise words of winnie the pooh, but also through the october 2008 issue of US Vogue and an editorial entitled handmade's tale. the layout takes a behind the scenes look at paris haute couture and the highly skilled tailors and dressmakers whose wizardry makes the magic real. after seeing dior & I, the film about raf simon's first collection for dior, I started to appreciate this patrick demarchelier layout even more. after all, its really the people behind the scenes who make everything come to life. there were so many great dresses featured in this one, from christian lacroix to jean paul gaultier, but I really loved this image of supermodel natalia vodianova in this silk fringed givenchy pink dress with matching balloon. even though this dress is not really my style I love the fantasy, it conveys. its whimsical and it has a very parisian chic quality about it, very reminiscent of audrey hepburn in funny face. I am pretty sure that patrick demarchelier definitely wanted to capture that ambience and I wanted to do the same with my balloon image on the beach. either way, if you have not seen this editorial do check it out. I think if you love couture and how dresses are made, it will put a smile on your face. this specific photo and the other ones, certainly did just that and more!

the row spring/summer 2015

okay so I must admit, this summer there are a few collections that I actually have very much responded to. as we all know, its so hard these days to keep up with every designer, but when someone catches my eye I will take notice and put the extra effort in too see, what is going on. case in point, I think my favorite spring/summer 2015 collection has to be from The Row. I don't know why I love this collection, but I do and I think mary-kate and ashley olsen have such a great understanding about simplicity and sophistication. I also think the fabrics and just how every piece is designed this season, looks so utterly stunning. silks are used beautifully, within many of the pieces and I love the fluidity and the way these clothes move. plus, the raw surroundings are a perfect backdrop to this collection. to pick a favorite ensemble is rather difficult, but I love this look, in particular. I think its the wrapping that caught my attention. the way that black jacket wraps across her chest is quite amazing and I love the way it layers with that shirt underneath and then the train that pops out in the back. this look is ethereal, but still very refined and I like the pairing with those sleek pants and sandals. its utilitarian fashion done right and I also love that its black. I saw so much black on the runway for spring/summer and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that....no surprise, really but I always find when I see something noir chic that I can easily translate that with my own personal wardrobe. I am trying to do just that with this look and if you have not seen this collection by The Row, do yourself a favor and check it out. I think this is their best season yet, and I am not surprised that they won, the CFDA womenswear designer of the year just a couple of weeks ago as this collection certainly displays why. personally, I think they are taking minimalism to new heights....don't you think?

sisters in black

mary-kate and ashley olsen

I try hard not to post photos of celebrities, but sometimes I make exceptions! the evolution of mary-kate and ashley olsen has been an interesting one and I must admit about 10 years I was very confused by the way they dressed. I just remember looking through tabloids at the supermarket and seeing them on the street with ripped up jeans, oversized sunnies, and carrying starbucks in their hands and not quite understanding what exactly was being praised about their style. well, I must admit now, I have done a full 360. something has changed with them and I admire the sophistication and noir chic they exude, especially when they are together in black. I came across this image of them last week and I just love the way they both looked. its such a perfect moment in minimalism and how to look sleek in black. I have no idea if this outfit is by The Row or another designer because I see that they are very much into wearing other labels, but I think it just works on so many levels. I love the kimono-like sleeves, but also how refined it is, and how they adorned themselves with just the right amount of vintage jewelry. very rarely, do I ever see sisters in black who know how to wear this color so effortlessly, but I think they do it, so perfectly. this is so different from the way they were 10 years ago and I think they have fully come into their own and I so applaud them, for finding their personal style and for what they have brought to The Row. I feel they have brought a simplicity and uniqueness to fashion that just seems so needed these days. I see so many other designers or even just people on the street who tend to over do it with excessive jewelry or just too much accessorizing and I think why not just go back to basics? not too sound snobby, but I think mary-kate and ashley olsen very much understand this style philosophy and how it really is needed in today's fast world. perhaps, the stendhal quote is true only great minds can afford a simple style....I don't know about you, but I very much live, by these wise words!

summer turban

since today is the official first day of summer I thought it would be appropriate to mark the occasion with my new lime-yellow turban. a couple of months ago, I mentioned that while I was in new york I found a special one at the norma kamali store. it took me long enough to share, but I thought today was the perfect day. I so love the way it drapes across my head and I can't get enough of that yellow-lime color. I know its not black, but I prefer a turban with a unique color. when I think of a summer turban this is what comes to mind and I think its the perfect color splash that I need with my simplified wardrobe. last week, I got to wear it and I thought it would be quite suiting by the pool, especially with that crystal clear blue water and the way it balances with my asymmetrical black norma kamali bathing suit. I wanted it to look like a kenton nelson painting with all those textures and I think my sister captured it quite well. not only does the turban work with a black bathing suit, but it also goes with a minimal black dress. no surprise really, but this is how I work with color, in small doses. at any rate, I will most likely be wearing this yellow-lime turban all summer, but I am so glad that I finally got to unveil it, long overdue!
