with a little free time during the long weekend, i made over my sisters normally blank (but beautiful) canvas, and photographed her in my laundry room. so pleased with the results, and most importantly it was a good time.

lately, I have been thinking how they are no good shows about style anymore on television. shows like project runway and mtv's stlyed can be entertaining, but there is something missing. I remember the days when there were so many informative shows about models and fashion such as fashion file with tim blanks, fashion television with jeanne beker, and let's not forget mtv's house of style with cindy crawford. house of style taught me not only about high fashion, but about the importance of personal style. there are certain episodes I will never forget like watching tracey ullman and cindy crawford play dress-up in paris, browsing through björk's closet, seeing naomi campbell put zit cream on, or looking stylish on a budget with former fashion designer todd oldham.....now that's what I call good fashion programming.

love him or hate him, issey miyake is one of the true avant garde fashion designers. there is an almost origami like magic to the way he uses texture and cut to display those amazing geometric shapes. one of my favorite fashion moments of the year was browsing through his soho boutique in new york city. I support any designer that stimulates the imagination through clothing.

underrated beauty

i don't think sherilyn fenn got the attention she deserved. its obvious that she inspired so many of todays vintage loving fashionistas.

madonna reinvented the 'bohemian' look back in october 1992 for vogue...the style was very anna sui with a big floppy hat, tons of jewelry, a black blouse, and bell bottoms...almost like a glamorous hippie.

chelsea girls

there is so much mystique to the chelsea hotel in new york city. various artists, musicians and writers have all stayed at this hotel. one of my favorite looks from the 90's was the chelsea girl look, all inspired from the 1970s. chelsea girls wore chiffon, print dresses, and scarves, usually in dark colors. their make-up tended to be dark eyes, lips and pale skin...very much like a little girl lost.

i have still never bought a song on itunes. i may be old fashioned, but i love to look at the artwork, lyrics, and photos that accompany the record. this cute picture of courtney love can be seen when you unfold the "live through this" booklet.

my sister has such an imagination when it comes to applying make-up, as seen in this john galliano 40's inspired look from his 1995 spring/summer collection...I know she has many new ideas for future make-up projects, which I can't wait to photograph.

I was just thinking about the movie Clueless (1995), and the scene where cher is held up at gunpoint in her red alaïa dress made me think of those iconic stretchy dresses that came to define the lycra revolution. let's not forget that unforgettable dialogue... cher:"this is an alaïa" her assailent:"an a whata" cher:"it's like a totally important designer"

stanley kubrick had such an eye for gorgeous costumes, set design, and superb camera work as seen in his last film eyes wide shut...one of my favorite moments in this film is the way he captured nicole kidman's sleek black dress...almost like an egon schiele painting.

how to make an entrance....

by far, one of my favorite red carpet moments this year, was shalom harlow in vintage bob mackie at the met costume institute gala. this is what I call the epitome of elegance....I am all for a look that does volume correctly. somehow, the costume institute gala has replaced the oscars for high fashion glamour.

björk's 1997 'homogenic' album cover can be quite scary, yet pretty at the same time. something about this cover reminds me of grace jones, but what sets it apart is her alexander mcqueen style...definetly a bold look and one of the best album covers of the 90's.

part II: grunge and glory

where were you in '92?....I can't seem to get enough of the grunge look, so I had to post more photos. for me, grunge as a fashion movement changed the way people dressed. it had a street wit that hadn't existed before that time. it told people they can wear what they feel like...very passive aggressive. I still find it interesting that marc jacobs was fired from perry ellis for this collection, people found the look of silk dresses with flannels not 'designer.' Isn't that part of the beauty of grunge?
